Steps needed to retire in Portugal 

Although you do not need to apply for a visa to travel to Portugal, you must follow certain administrative procedures if you want to stay long. 

Therefore, after living in Portugal for three months, you must apply to the town hall for an extension of the authorization for another three months. 

To retire in Portugal, you need a residence permit and a tax identification number (NIF). You also need a residence permit issued by the municipality where you live. 

These documents will allow you to live in Portugal quite normally for another five years. At the end of these five years, you can apply for permanent resident status and enjoy your retirement in peace.
