Spotlight on the Barcelos Rooster

Barcelos is world-renowned for its "Galo de Barcelos", the famous colorful ceramic rooster that has become a symbol of Portugal.

barcelos

The legend of the Barcelos Rooster is deeply rooted in local culture. It tells the story of a Galician pilgrim who, on his way to Santiago de Compostela, was unjustly accused of theft and condemned to be hanged.

Despite his protests of innocence, no one believed him. As a last resort, he asked to be brought before the judge who had condemned him. The pilgrim then declared that, to prove his innocence, the roasted rooster on the table would crow at the moment of his execution. Skeptical but intrigued, the judge agreed. Miracle! As the pilgrim was about to be hanged, the rooster stood up and crowed, thus proving his innocence. Thanks to the rooster, the judge immediately ordered the pilgrim's release.

Since then, the Barcelos Rooster has become a true symbol of justice and faith. It is immortalized in the famous colorful ceramic figurines.
